ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Using information from the articles on pages 57-60 in our text, discuss the differences between human thinking and artificial intelligence using facts from the articles and your personal opinion. You may even give examples from entertainment media such as the films "AI," and "I Robot" or others.  75-100 words.

  1. Let me just start with this the "Three laws of Robotics":

1.A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2.A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Compaired to the human mind robots need some sort of rules that govern their AI as shown in the book and movie "I Robot". We would have to protect our rights as such theirs. These laws are now even put into effect for the AI world and the world of robotics.

  2. In the movie Artificial Intelligence, the robot eventually starts to have feelings and expressions as an actual human would have. I personally don’t think that is possible. The Author Ray Kurzweil thinks that this will eventually happen. He says that the AI will eventually be able to have a conscience and that it will be able to have the same type of experiences as we do. I think that we may think that a computer will have these capabilities, and they may appear to have these feelings and emotions, but the bottom line is we the humans have programmed these computers to give that appearance that they can think like we do.

  3. I think that the rate of development of computers and AI is terrifying. I do believe that computers or machines will be able to develop emotions and I do believe that technology is and has become a bit out of control. We are developing things that are smarter than most people, and with this development comes people who may design machines capable of harming us. I also believe that if it is possible to assign a conscience to a machine, somone will do it. I don't think that allowing machines to make their own decisions is a good idea, however I do believe it's possible and in the near future.

  4. I believe that any robot or computer can personally not have emotions at all. They are equipment and they don't even do physical things like running or anything like a human can do. There just might be a computer or machine that might be created in the future to do such things but I don't think that it will be successful. If someone made a computer that could control it self and do thing like a human than it could hurt people or even worse, take over the world. I don't think that would be a good idea and I think it would become a big problem to many people. I think that we should keep things normal and let humans be humans and not let machines take over our life.

  5. The rate at which Artificial Intelligence is advancing actually scares me a little. I do not believe that AI allows machines to have emotions. To say that may never happen, well it may. I think humans will strive to create bigger and better AI to out-do others and make their life easier. They keep making new phones with better technology and features. In a way I think alot of it is just a way for companies to make even more money. I think we need to go back to doing things for ourselves and not depending so much on AI. (Although I am not sure I could live without my GPS) It is always a test of our own intelligence when there is a power outage or glitch in AI. Jayme H.

  6. I found the article on Artificial Intelligence very interesting. I remember when computers first came out and I don't think anyone ever thought the technology would come this far. Initially, computers were very primative and required humans to program and operate them. Now, with advanced technology, computers practically run themselves.
In the science world there is debate over the topic of AI evolving into something that does not need humans. Some scientists believe that computers have the intelligence that humans do and that they don't have a spirit or show emotion. Others believe that computers do have the capacity to make decisions and that they already exceed human intelligence. There is technology were a chip can be planted in our brain to stimulate emotion and behavior or to allow a virtual reality. This is facinating and scary at the same time...people become programmed robots. I saw I-Robot and it is scary to think Robots could become even more human like or humans can become more Robot like. I do believe that as we evolve along side of computers that cyborgs and robots will be our future. I don't think it was an accident that humans invented this technology. It is a fact that humans do not use most of their brains. Computer technology I think is meant to evolve our brains and to open up the areas in our brain that we don't use.

  7. I found the article interesting, but on the other hand in my opinion, technology is taking some things a little too far.To create something that is man made to have emotions to me,is too far fetched. A human sometimes cannot control their feelings and emotions, so why does technology think they should by doing it to a robot? Emotions and feelings are of human nature and thats where it should stay, not to program them into a robot. We have enough people that cannot control their actions, why create even more problems by creating robots whos "artificial intellegence" chip may go haywire and lose control too.

  8. I have not seen either of those movies, but the reading about artificial intelligence was very interesting and eye opening. I would hope that never as humans will allow technology to advance us. If a human cannot sometimes control and beheld accountable for our own feelings and actions how can we except a robot or technology to. I also think that because everything that is technology based is made from a human. Humans make mistakes. I cannot even imagine if something were to go wrong and robots or technology was more powerful then us as humans.

  9. Artificial Intelligence is the study and development of intelligent machines capable of performing complex tasks that require thought and behavior that are normally associated with human intelligence. Artificial intelligence adapts characteristics of human problem solving skills and uses them to enable computers and machines to do things as a human would. I feel as though giving a computer the ability to “think” and act as a human is just crazy. Bottom line here is that humans are getting more and more lazy therefore they create things to do their jobs for them.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I have never seen AI or I Robot, mainly because the whole idea of artificial intelligence really does not appeal to me. I feel like we can have really great things by using artificial intelligence, such as using a robot to seek out and diffuse a bomb, or even to learn more about an animal species that would otherwise be dangerous for a human to observe. I would never want to see the day where we live amongst androids, and I feel that there is a limit to everything we do, like an invisible line that should not be crossed. I feel the same way about cloning. It drives me crazy that they are trying to clone a wooly mammoth. I think we as humans are starting to mess around with science and nature too much and we will eventually screw ourselves over because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I personally believe that things evolve over time. How do you think we as humans became who we are...we evolved! Just because Artificial Intelligence is for robots and computers, we are the ones who are morphing them into what they are. We have feelings and need connection. Why wouldn't we put that into a program and then have it evolve into true feelings. I believe anything is possible and life is always evolving and morphing to fit into its environment.

  12. i think we learn things everyday no matter what. weather it is t school or at work or from someone we know or don't know we all learn something everyday either by seeing someone do something, listening to someone say something or whatever it is. but i believe we all learn something everyday.

  13. If you were to ask me, the difference between AI and humans is emotion. I dont care how great a robot can do something that robot could never feel emotions like a human being. In movies robots do end up having human-like emotions, but thats a movie, its not real life. No robot will ever be able to "feel" like a human can. no way.

  14. The thing I find most interesting about this is that the people who seem to be certian that human beings can not create a new type of life (in our own image), seem to be the same people who believe that we were created by another living being who created us in his (or her) own image. Iroically the same group told us for centuries that animals had no feelings and that we were not animals but somethign higher. Instead of asking yes or no, maybe we should ask oursleves how and why as a society. Could the three rules of robotics be equated to our ten commandments? I also find it interesting that with the three rules of robotics, robots are already held to a standard that we as a species can not seem to accomplish ourselves. So when asked the question: do humans have the ability to create life more intellegent than ourselves? If maybe we were created to be a more perfect version of what created us, with abilities and expectations that our creator(s) were not endowed with themselves. If creation is truly within our grasps, would we really be so vain as to only create things that are inferior to us, that can handle tasks and figure things out that we could do just as well ourselves?

  15. I do not believe that artificial intelligence's can obtain a consciousness.AI's can do things without emotions or morals because they are simply machines and I don't believe could grasp an idea like that. I do not believe that AI's will ever take over the world or anything but I do believe in the future they could run things and run facilities completely on their own almost like how the space station was on the movie WallE. Robots and AI's will most likely become lifelike and more advanced in the future but I don't think they will ever truly be like a human.

  16. When reading Artificial Intelligence and Evolution, then In Our Image: Artificial Intelligence and the Human Spirit, I understood both views and agree with somw more than others. Herzfeld mixed technology with religion, which I feel that shold represent only the religious people. When Herzfeld mentioned the the fascination with AI says more about our nature as human beings than it does computer technology, I think she meant that we as people like to create a image of ourselves through, trying to make computers smarter and faster, doing more work and ridding humans of many tasks. There is a pro and con of that. The pro being that there less repetitive injuries for employees on the job, adn computers are helpful in many time cosuming tasks on the job and at home.
Herzeld feels that Kurzweil is trying to create a virtual world for everyone. An escape into a virtual world where space is infinite, trying to btain a sense of immortality yet if ther is no one living in the real world then what good is that?
Computers can never replace a human being, we as humans have thoughts, memories and experiences that help us grow and become who they are as individuals. Just as we as humans are imperfect to our maker, our computers will always be imperfect to us, always needing more spped, or graphics or something.

  17. I feel that AI is scary and If you watch the movie I Robot, they are not supposed to obey their humans and not harm them. But that did not happen instead they turned on them. That's the problem with messing with nature your just asking for trouble when sometimes you should just leave well enough alone. I also can't see computers or robots ever having real human emotion because that's just one thing you can't teach a machine is to feel what we feel. Ya you can teach them to fake it pretty good but that's about it. It's ironic enough that we think we can make this technology work and obey us where it's a matter of time before something tragic happens.

  18. I think all AI is just a robot being controled by a human in some way. I think movies try to make you think that Robots will someday have emotions. Movies such as Wall-E, Terminater, or I robot of course all the robots have emotions. I dont think AI have any kind of emotion. As the years go on there are so many new things that humans do not have to do becaue AI is taking over. Which is not a good thing because I hope it doesnt come down to so many people without jobs because they wont need us anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I do believe AI will advance on many levels but I do not think that a robots train of thought could get as complex as the human brain. We retain memories and connect certain memories with emotions. A robot wouldn't know how to feel. I think they could get emotions but only the emotions they see us humans experience. I don't think a robot could act on it's own, I think they can only do what they are told. Therefore the only thing I worry about is the way our government is wanting more money, so they could possibly train robots to do jobs we do, and soon they won't need us to work anymore.

  20. I feel as though, we as a human race are trying to take the very essence of life away from ourselves. Based on the the articles it seems that the future ideas are too make another species (robots) who are superior to us. I do no believe this is possible. I understand the idea behind transforming the human into a stronger, faster, more efficent, immortal creation. I think we have come along way as humans and there have been thousands of life changing inventions and miracles. There has also been tragidies and genocide. All of which have existed because of human will and choice. The human race might be irreplaceable, but in no way is is able to be duplicated, as far as human emotion and compassion, the ability to love and live, the ability to make your own decision based on what your heart might tell you. How can you take a human and make it into a robot with these capabilities? A robot does not have a heart and never will. I think were on a path of self destruction of the human race, if in fact we decide to hand our very own lives over to a machine.

  21. I believe that robots may someday be as real as a human being and have feelings much like humans. I have also watched many shows on robots and A.I. and some scietists believe that robots will be around long after humans are gone and will take over the world when it becomes uninhabitable for humans. This may be a long way off but may not be as far fetched as it sounds because we keep making more and more intelligent robots and computers.I think that within the next 10-20 years we will see robots doing things that we never expected that would be possible even though a robot today cannot even pickup a cup. I believe Hertzfeld sees where robotics are going and the excitement and ease that they could bring to humanity.

  22. After reading the articles, there is a little part of me that says, maybe one day artificial intelligence will reach or come pretty close to being human. As a society we are advancing at a very high rate, so who’s to say 60-100 years down the road that artificial intelligence won’t have feelings?
I think it may be possible for robots to start taking on human characteristics if being exposed to us long enough. Programming machines has come a long way, they can now sense emotion. Maybe the robot wouldn’t be able to express its very own emotion but copy someone else’s.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think that an artificial intelligence computer can have some kind of feelings if they are built well enough. I think that they will never have as many feelings a human being does though. I think this due to them not being able to feel everything and do everything that we can. Computers cannot have the kind of connection with each other like us humans do because of not being able to have family or to give birth and having that feeling of belonging to something or something belonging to. They can also not smell like we do because they do not have that sense. They also cannot feel pain so they cannot feel things as much as people do. I think that robots have some feeling because of the program that they get to tell them what to feel but not as much as we do cause we actually experience the emotion and feeling.

  24. I think that AI is a good thing that will come to pass in the not so distant future. For analytical thought processes AI would definitely work to our gain. I saw this special on TV once about this super computer called WATSON beat 2 Jeopardy champions, so the idea of AI in our normal lives does not seem too far off. The way a computer thinks is more of a quantitve approach, dealing with statistics and records at a ridiculously fast rate. Machines do not have the capacity to feel emotion. Our emotions are shaped by what has happened in the events in our lives. There is no universal code for people to feel a certain way. The complexity of the human brain to feel emotion or create something from emotion can't be replicated on any level. If such thing has been attempted, it would be as flawed as the person who wrote the program or rules or code. Emotional intelligence continues to grow all throughout our lives, how can such a thing be accounted for with a set space for memory like a computers hard drive? The idea of it is impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A very large difference between AI and human intelligence is the fact that we can feel. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. Even if a robot could feel emotion it wouldn't be genuine, due to the robot being programmed. Movies about such a thing are entertaining, but otherwise obnoxious when taken literal. There is no possible way for a human to program something as sophisticated as itself. That actually sounds kind of ironic to me. We can program robots and machines to do a lot of things, but AI is called artificial for a reason, robots cannot react with pure spontinuity.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think that artificial intelligence could help us and hurt us. Robots that are intelligent could be used in predicting the weather better for safe evacuations. Computers with superior logic can also help in the safety of cars and other things we use. But I also say that it can hurt us as well. I don't mean by killing us or destroying the Earth but they can take away jobs and hurt the economy. The way we move into the future and create echnology is too fast and we can't balance the playing field. More and more jobs are being lost to countries like China and India who have way more robotics to do the jobs that we can't provide for the money Corporations want to spend. Robotics is good if you don't want to work hard.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The way technology has advanced today shows the negative and positive things that it does for our way of living.Robots have replaced jobs, but helped organizations make money faster. The people who have created these advancements used their intelligence to create the unbelievable, but some have created ones that follow all routes to evil. We see it in our world today, the rich businessmen must invest in labor jobs to keep people at work, but that would be under their determination. Machines cannot replace this world, because we built it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I personally feel that it would be impossible for any kind of robotic intelligence to gain any type of emotions or feelings. Unlike in the movie Artificial Intelligence the real life does not work in this sort of way.
If a piece of AI were to gain these emotions they may as well become unstoppable with whatever they see fit in doing. This could of course could be anything from terrifying a park to dominating the world. A computer can do a lot in comparison to a human as a human's brain may be seen as a computer, a robot's brain is a super computer.

  29. Today there are systems that think and act like humans, these systems can think and act rationally as well. Some may say if these programs can think like a human being then we must have some way in determining how humans think. Artificial intelligence plays a major role in Cognitive science. Scientist uses this method to indicate the same scope of intelligence in the actions of humans so the system will be behavior appropriate and able to adapt to the demands of the environment within some limits. However there is no proof the symbol system is the center of human intelligence but both human and the machine shows the property of being intelligent. I dont believe that AI are as competent as Humans we have what we call reason and emotions, such feelings we cant control. AI feelings and emotions ( actions ) are forcefully implanted into their thought process.

Being a tech person I am well aware of the upcomming technology of AI. Computers have made a huge advancment and sooner or later they are going to begin thinking like humans having feeling and interacting just as we do. In the near future if your building a house you can build an AI based home with all your appliances being conected to a central home netowrk(brain). AI is very well potentially going to be able to surpass HI which is a very scary thought.

There are many differences between artificial intelligence and human thinking. Even though artificial intelligence has come along way they may be able to interact and act like humans but they are not able to feel like a human can. In the movie AI the little robot boy keeps trying to eat to compete with the human kid and he eats until he breaks because he didn't know when to stop because he didn't have the feelings. I personally believe that nothing can compare with a humans emotion because of how complex and fast they can change. The only thing that can be done to something with AI is that it has to be forcefully programmed in.

AI has improved our lives tremendously this is true. Machines and computers have been created to simulate "human behavior" to an extent but human behavior is unpredictable. And then there is human emotion, there is no replacing or simulating that. Take the bond between twins for example, not even science can explain how they can heal each other or sense each their from miles away. And what happens when the computer surpass their programmers? Humans down to their very core crave human contact and connection, there is just no program or robot that can replace or simulate that.

  33. I agree with several of the opinions stated here. I agree that robots are good for a lot of things, detecting bombs, entering valcancos to gather information. I agree that they have made humans lazy which I do believe is going to get worse in the future. I also believe that some this may come back to bite us in the butt. I also do not think that a computer or a robot could ever pocess the emotions of humans, their a piece of machinary, made of wires circuit boards, etc., how do you teach that to feel emotion or think for itself.

    ReplyDelete
  34. When I think of artificial intelligence I think of the movie maximum overdrive, where the cars come live and hunt and kill people. This movie made me think that if a computer, or intelligent technology has the same emotions as a person; when people are upset they go to other people to help them, in the movie it is the same concept but with cars. I think that if machines were made with the same emotions that people have they could somehow connect with similar machines and accomplish the same idea. After reading the assigned reading I believe that computers should not have the same emotions as people. I also believe that it would be tough to have technology be smarter than the human brain because people have to build it and design it. I also think that technology can only find and accomplish things already accomplished from humans, sometimes only in a faster more efficient way. I do believe scientists will design artificial intelligence could be as smart as humans and can further help scientist discover new findings.

  35. Human thinking and artificial intelligence (AI) differs in that AI does not have free will, emotions, or the ability to differentiate right from wrong. It may be true that AI can become more intelligent; however, it can only perform what it has been programmed to do. AI will never have the gift of true emotions or free will. Therefore, in the wrong hands AI can be extremely dangerous. Humans may be born with a set intelligence; however, what AI lacks is what makes human thinking far superior.

  36. I feel that artificial intelligence is basically taking over the world. We as humans allow technology take over. We allow these sorts of things to wron our lives to the point where we dont need to do anything anymore. We have envolved from so much that we are doing it again with artificial intelligence. But then again if yoi open your mind no computer will ever have emotion or feel what we do. That is something human thinking will neve be replaced.

  37. we can not let technology control our lives. we still are people and need to do people things. Technology can help us but not do it for us

  38. I think that artificical intelligence is taking a toll on the world and taking control. I also think that this has made humans very lazy. I do also think that even though technology controls most of our lives, we still learn something every single day whether its from doing something or learning it from someone else.

I felt that the article for AI was very interesting. The difference between AI and humans is that we can feel different emotions and we are living and AI can't feel any emotion. also they say that AI is taking over but it will only take over if you alow it to. for me I won't let it control my life only I can control my life.

  41. Cell phones, computers, robots, cars that park themselves... If the technology keeps getting bigger and smarter, where do you think we will end up in 50 or more years? We need to go back to paper and pens and regular house phones. The teens and adults rely on technology to do everything.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think using things such as robots and other technology is not so much proving how developed we are but how lazy we have become. Instead of learning the skills needed to complelte tasks such as parking a car we creat things to do it for us. If we keep depending on technology to fill the gaps then they will keep getting bigger and bigger and they wont be able to learn or support themselve without that technology.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think that the more that they keep making technology more advanced, the more that the human brain will actually have to accomplish on it's own. People won't have to really think about things because it can just be done for them through technology. There maybe the ones out there that keep up with the technology to make it more advaced, but eventually we'll have technology making technology.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Artificial intelligence should not surprise those who make it. Programmers put in every option the computer is capable of. They are only capable of what we allow them to be capable of! Using robots for everyday things is fine, but I think programmers need to be careful with the coding they use because an open-ended code could allow for functions we do not anticipate.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I think that having robots can be beneficial for technology and detecting certain things. At the same time having robots do all the work makes people lazy and expect the technology to do the work itself. I think that if people keep using technology instead of researching and doing the work for themselves that it is only going to get worse in the future.

  46. After reading artificial intelligence and evolution I found this article very informational. It is amazing on how far technology has advanced through the years. Robots can be used for several jobs more and more each day. The bad thing is that it will eliminate jobs for people and can hurt the economy even more. Also it is hard for me to believe that robots can have feelings. I think that is impossible to happen and think that is impossible.
