Cognitive errors, errors in logical reasoning such as an irrational thought, can disrupt the life of the most ordinary person. Read the entry on page 117 in our text and respond to question number 1 in 75-100 words.
Discuss why/how ordinary people may "fall into" such beliefs. What circumstances could contribute to irrational beliefs? What are some methods to help yourself or someone else dispel these types of beliefs? Feel free to give your opinion on any and all options.
Many people have the believe that they have self-hatred for themselves. That is what depression is and it also has self sadness about things we have noting to do with or can change. Depressed people think that people are always against them for almost any reason. The keys to this is the feeling of abandonment, longiness, and just being depressed. Thinking like this has always had the therapist confussed about the way these individuals think.
ReplyDeleteDepression and low self esteem are two things that society struggle with. There are many reasons people struggle with depression such as loss of work, or problems at home. Society paints a picture of women to be a size zero and have perfect bodies by airbrushing every photo taken. Chilren grow up thinking that is normal by Tv shows and magazines. Its very easy for someone to believe things that people tell them, with no proof that it is not real.
ReplyDeleteI think that depression is a problem in our society. I feel that we should be able to help them anyway possible and to make them better. I think that if we give people with depression good things to look forwards too, then I think they might feel a lot better about themselves. Another thing would be to have a good friend by their side and to direct them into a better life and to have good hopes and dreams in their future. When people say they are struggling with depression then just don't stand there, try to help them out the best of your ability and make them feel a 100% better about them and to make them know they have a better person inside of them.
ReplyDeleteMany times depression hits after some sort of tragedy. Other times, some people just cannot handle everyday life. For some people, the idea of going through the day without being medicated is scary. They feel that they need to be medicated throughout the day just to push themselve foreward. This pertains to the hypocondracts of the world who think they have every illness known to man. That's my opinion at least. This is why so many people in the world are addicted to drugs. Doctors are willing to give out prescriptions to just about anyone. All you have to say is "I'm depressed" and they say "Okay, take some Zoloft. All better!" I hate to sound rude but some people just need to get over themselves, some people.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, there are genuine people who ware depressed. These people have expierenced some sort of tragedy that has just about pushed them over the edge of being able to handle life.
Depression is a very hard thing to deal with and most of the time out of their control for some people. I understand that some people can function in a everyday life dealing with depression but you will find them sitting by them self and not having a lot of friends. Some people have taken medications to deal with this problem but then that still could not help them. I feel that people with depression issues need to talk to people tell someone what is bothering them so they can fix it. Medications are helpful but let’s deal with the problem inside of just medicating people. We all just need to talk to people in times of need and maybe then they can feel better.
ReplyDeleteDepression, is anger turned tword self instead of imposed on others. Depression is something that everyone feels to some extent during some point in thier life. Depression at safe levels is the force that reminds us that we have not accomplished, performed or achieved to our own expectations; pushing us to try harder. At unsafe levels, depression is the force that causes us to perform act of self loathing behavior. I believe depression, like all things, is a two sided coin. Depression can be good or bad depending on the moderation. Balance, too much depression is a bad thing, but no depression is just as bad.
ReplyDeleteCognitive errors lead to irrational beliefs in many different ways. In most cases, I think this is evident when a person experiences something traumatic, and they can't stop thinking "If only I had...." In the recent sentencing of Jeni-Lyn Watson's murderer, her father said something along the lines of "it is a father's worst nightmare to not be able to protect his daughter." While I agree with that statement, such thinking will drive this man crazy. He will experience depression and guilt over something that he truly could not have stopped, as he had no control over the situation. I think that people tend to dwell on things that they have no control over and it impacts them greater than something that they made a conscience decision about. For example, and this is only my Opinion.....I feel that a woman who has a miscarriage (not her fault) will feel more guilty about the loss of her baby than a woman (who makes a choice) to have an abortion would feel. Every person has different thoughts and opinions about everything and every situation. This is the beauty of the human race. If everyone had the same thought process, it would be an awfully boring and unproductive world.
ReplyDeleteI have firsthand experience with the cognitive error of self-serving biases. There was an incident in my life that had an adverse effect on my state of mind for years. I lied to myself with lines like “If only…” or “It was all my fault.” These lies made it easy to hide the truth. Once I was able to finally stop lying to myself, it was easier to shed the light on the truth and to come to terms with the reality of the situation. Only then was I to find forgiveness and move forward with a healthy state of mind.
ReplyDeletePeople may have irrational thoughts because of stress in life such as soldiers coming home from war fall into PSDS and may do something that they normaly wouldnt consider rational. One could also fall into such things as distress from losing a job, lover or a friend to such things as death or by mistakes made that made them not together anymore. Losing sopmeone important can bring on a depressive state that may make someone think and act in ways that they normally wouldnt. Others are born with diseases that make them irrational and incapable of living in a society as a contributing member.
ReplyDeleteMost people fall into the belief of self-hatred and many other irrational beliefs are from believing that they are true. They believe that the irrational beliefs are true. Many circumstances could help with starting an irrational belief this could be anything such as a death, broken relationship, failure, fight, and etc. Some different ways to help you stop believing in the irrational beliefs are to ask yourself if they are true. See a doctor or a councilor about them or even talk to a family member. I think that this article is true that these irrational thoughts are the greatest cause of depression, rage, self- hatred and feeling of inadequacy.
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone can go through some type of level of depression in their life. For some people they feel lost and have low self-esteem. They have no confidence in themselves and believe everything they try to accomplish results in failure. Most people take medication to help with these feelings. In today’s society there is more stress for everyone, for example, having a fit body and providing a good income to support their family. I think that the best advice is to believe in yourself and do not let unfortunate bad results bring you down.
ReplyDeleteThe articles discussion on the connection between irrational ideas and depression was interesting. I agree with some of it but not all of it. I agree that people that suffer from depression exhibit irrational behavior or ideas. However, there are many people that have irrational beliefs and they do not suffer from depression. I know many people that are depressed and have worked with depressed people and it is true that they feel like the whole world is on their shoulders and this can affect how they view the world and how they behave. Yet, I have friends that do not have depression and have much in common with me but have some real strange beliefs. Sometimes it just hard being human...life is hard and alot of bad stuff happens that we don't like but we learn to deal with it through family, church, activities, medication or alcohol and drugs..pick your poison!

ReplyDeleteThe thing about rational thinking, is that when it comes to beliefs, a majority of the time they stem from one's own self esteem. People don't realize that low self esteem is actually a thinking disorder and unfortunately because this is ingrained at very young age, it's hard to readjust once that "idea" is there. This is where depression, eating and self injury disorders creep in and can affect the way you see and view everything else. This is where cognitive errors are made because logical reasoning goes out the window when your vision is obscured like that.
People have irrational thought because they give themselves unrealistic goals and don't get the results they want. Also, stress and tradgedy leads to this type of thinking. Irrrational thoughts tend to be extremes: perfection or worthlessness, happiness or death and complete control over everything. We are human; we mess up from time to time. Everything cannot go as planned all the time, it's impossible. A great way to combat these irrational thoughts is to be optimistic. Don't let the mistakes defeat you. Things in life have a way of working out for the best. I've been depressed more times than I can count, but I don't let that negativity get the best of me. Sometimes you have to adapt and overcome. Don't let the failure ground your potential, instead rise above it and keep moving forward. Learning from mistakes is a part of life, success means nothing without failure.
ReplyDeleteDepression and self esteem are very common problems people face today. Irrational thoughts and actions are not easily controlled for some and for those who don't have those problems they often don't understand and make unfair judgements. This is not to say that what they do is right but sometimes is out of their medical control. There are many agencies and medicines out there if a person can reach out to someone and be able to accept that help.
ReplyDeleteI think that the media and society paints an unattainable picture of happiness. And when we cannot reach this level or feel as though our lives are inadequate, we begin to think negative thoughts such as If I do not have complete control I will never be happy. I think that to avoid depression, we must accept the misfortunes in life, do our best to change them and realize that nothing is perfect.

ReplyDeleteDepression is one of the hardest things to deal with in the world today. Its so common and a lot of people don't know how to deal with it. Ordinary people fall into such beliefs because something traumatic happens to them and there completely lost on how to deal with it. If people have these thoughts they'll never be happy. For people to deal with depression they need to accepts bad things that happen in life and think that life goes on no matter what.
Irrational beliefs are inaccurate and can be illogical beliefs that are used to interpret external events. They are self-defeating, unconditional, inconsistent with reality, and unlikely to find empirical support. Ordinary people maintain rational beliefs which are logical, flexible, and consistent with reality. If a person holds irrational beliefs, negative life events occurs in everyone's life that is surrounded by that person and will result in inappropriate negative emotions and dysfunctional behaviors. Irrational beliefs also play a role as causal factors in a number of behavior disorders. You can remove yourself from the negative surroundings and convert yourself is a positive atmosphere that will better yourself and allow you to snap back into reality.
ReplyDeleteEveryone deals with depression differently. Some people are so down on themselves to where they lose hope and want to believe that anything is possible. Another quality is low self esteem. If one has low self esteem, then they will believe anything that a person or media tells them. For instance, a product making that would make them look "younger". The person with low self esteem feels that if they use this product, their problems will go away and their self esteem would build up. I would avoid this by knowing the difference between reality and irrational beliefs by having common sense and if I think something is not true or have questions, I would research the issue and come up with my own conclusion.
ReplyDeleteEveryone deals with depression one time or another in there lives. In today's society everyone is being judged on what they look like, what possessions they own, and how successful they are. It is easy for someone to lose track on whats really important in life and compare themselves to others, and instead of being thankful for the things they do have and what they have accomplished they tend to focus on what they don't have. I have seen depression first hand with someone I care about and it is a very serious illness. I'm not sure why others can get depressed but find away out of it and then others get into such a deep depression that they need medication to help.
ReplyDeleteI understand that in society today depression is a big factor and alot of people I think go a little overboard with it. There are different ways to help yourself when you are depressed and most of the time it is in your own control. Say your depressed by a person or situation in your life the only person that can change that is you. You could go to a theropist and pay them a ton of money to get the same advice that your already know. I don't belief in taking a drug in life for every little thing that goes wrong in life, if that was the case I would be a walking zombie. Instead I take the higher road and just consider the source and it also helps when I really don't care what other people think I have enough problems of my own instead of dealing with other peoples garbage.
ReplyDeleteThe error within people who feel out of the circle of natural life, is the reasons of self wants and needs to feel accepted and happy. Personally, I have been at a state where I thought the world was against me and I had no where to go. To beleive in yourself is the first key to ones happiness, and feeling accepted and not alone is the determination of that happiness. Go at the world as if it is against you in a positive way, but strive for excellence and treat others how you would like to be treated at the sametime. It helped me out, because time can be against you, and living life to the fullest is the reward feeling to help others and experience new things the whole world is full of.
ReplyDeleteWe, as people find it very hard to believe that something we hear enough times (esecially if we hear it when we are younger) could possibly not be true. If our parents tell us that we are stupid, even if we know better, we are still going to doubt our intellect and decision making ability. If we are told by everyone that there is an invisible person in the sky who has certian things he doesn't want us to do and if we displease him he will banish us eternally into a firey pit of torment, than even later in life if we realize that is kind of silly we will still catch ourselves trying to please a god that we don't believe in. If we are brought up thinking that dogs are not a foodsource, than we will see cultures that eat dogs as being weird or wrong. I think it's pretty much the same thing
ReplyDeleteMany different people suffer from depression throughout their lives. Depression makes these people upset a lot of the time and unproductive.Suffering from depression also makes a person more accepting to bad ideas and allows themselves to fall for things like fallacies.Ordinary people can easily fall into irational thinking when they are upset and down from depression or if they have low self esteem. I personally take the mind over matter approach and try to think clearly and get past difficulties.
ReplyDeleteI think that cognitive errors contribute to irrational beliefs in several different ways. If an individual lacks mental clarity, but has no reason behind there reason for being upset, then this person is being irrational. A great deal of being human is acting on emotions and it is a task to tone down our emotions at times and think rationally. When a person has trouble doing so, their mental status might be less than stable. A person can become depressed, angry, sad, lonely, confused, and so on. If I were to sit here and tell myself over and over again, that I must be perfect or else I will not succeed in life, I will always be unhappy. Being positive and not thinking about all the negative aspects of a situation will help a person grow and improve. An unrealistic goal is a cognitive error, and will be the cause of an irrational belief, such as the one I just mentioned. I think surrounding yourself with positive people and people who love you will help a person who might “fall into” these irrational beliefs.
ReplyDeleteOrdinary people fall into such beliefs because they come up with irrational ideas that can spin them off into becoming depressed. When people get into a bad mood they start over thinking things and start pitying themselves. Circumstances like coming in third at a competition or losing your job could contribute to irrational beliefs. Some methods someone could use would be to take a deep breath and realize that it’s not the end of the world. That you can pull yourself together and achieve whatever you set your mind too. I have my days were I feel as though things will never get better. But you learn to realize that you’re being ridiculous and do something to make you feel happy again.

ReplyDeletePeople tbat deal with a tramatic event in their lives tend to hald it against themelves instead of trying to get over it and move on to bigger and better things. You can not let the past ruin your future. Other irrational ideas can cause a person to be dead set on a belief in reaction to feeling alone and abandoned
I believe that depression is an internal battle that one struggles with. I believe that depression can also be over come if one is willing to change their “self talk”. When somebody constantly has a negative perspective, then their self talk is constantly negative. Realizing that people have the choice to do, think and believe certain things, they would feel more in control. I also believe that if everybody slowed down and took time out of the day, or week to do something that they really enjoy, it would benefit their self talk and ease their irritations.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, depression is something many people suffer from. Some have mild cases and some suffer from it so badly they find it hard to cope with everyday life. If feel if depressed people had more support systems along with more support from familes and friends they could cope better. But alot of people try and hide their depression because they feel ashamed and so forth. If people who are depressed seek the help they need or just find someone to talk to and help them out it would be very beneficial to them to ge their feelings out instead of bottling them up.
ReplyDeleteI was once married to some that was on medication for depression as well as anxiety, he had irrational thoughts, but without the use of medication I do believe things would have gotten out of control. He also received therapy. I am so glad that he had to courage to express what was going on with him and sought help. He has since passed away from something unrelated. I hope more and more people realize that there is help out there, all you have to is aask.
ReplyDeleteDepression seems to be a topic that everyone has experience at some point and time in there life. personally I haven't but I know people that have been through this. I don't believe in taking pills to cure this or bid rid of it. I believe that you can find yourself and really think about who you are and what you want to be.. I believe that people can pull themselfs out it.
ReplyDeleteoills dont cure everything but they make you think that they do. Depression is not something you can cure with pills. it might make it easier to handle but it doesnt cure it
ReplyDeleteI think many people develop a self-hatred towards themselves because there are many things in the media and our society that tells us how we should be. We should all be pretty, no flaws, skinny and happy. We are all not perfect, we were all born to be different. We all compare ourselves to others, whether we want to admit it or not. We compare and tell ourselves that be can be better. What can we do to be like that? We stress ourselves out trying to be what other people want us to be. This is a major cause for depression, however I also think that pills can't help it. We go through it everyday, we just have to learn how to have the right train of thought. We are all different. However, the process of depression can be rough. I suggest people find others to talk to, to help pull them through.
ReplyDeleteI think that depression is a huge problem in our community currently. I think that people are always falling into the trap of being depressed with everyday life problems, whether its family issues or issues at work. Depression isnt something that just goes away or you can sure. I believe that each individual has their own personal strenght that can get them through any tough time in their life.
ReplyDeleteDepression is a huge part of a person's life. This is a state of mind that people fall into for issues that have in their life. From family issues, to money issues, to relationship issues. This is a point in a persons where they feel that someone basically hates them, nothing else in their life could go wrong. They also have no way to cure depression, it will take a long time of getting better to over come depression. To overcome depression a person must find strengths deep within them to help move forward.
ReplyDeleteDepression is not the best situation someone can get into. Yes there many be help out there for them but it might not always help. I know from personal experiences people can not always come to good standings with themselves. Depression can lead to death. Some people get it in their heads that they are not good enough for the world and that they are a failure. bullying can help make people depressed if the kids or adults pick on them.
ReplyDeletedepression is part of everyones lifes some more than others. everyone has different events in lifes that affect who they are. depression is something that some people live with everyday. they have meds outthere to help but it doesnt cure it.
ReplyDeleteSome people that have obesity deal with depression. Wether you are a child or an adult you deal with name calling and other words. Words that are not to be said in writing. People that sre overweight tend not to like thereselves. To overcome depression you need to find what your good at and don't let people bully you.

ReplyDeleteThe two main things that affect this society is depression and low self- esteem. The reason I say this is because we look at magazines tv shows or even listen to some of our freinds who think we need to be perfect or look perfect but everyone has flaws it makes us who we are. By not eating and being a size zero is that really how you want to live your life and they wounder why people are dealing with the depression or low self-esteem. People do not have to be perfect they just have to go out there and live there lives without haveing anything bother you because if people can't accept you for you than you really don't need them in your life.
Things such as desspression and low selfesteem are dangerous things to have because it causes false thoughts and you get soo deep and wrapped up in what is going on its very hard to come out of. Media, family, "friends" and regular social pressures can cause anyone to develop negative thoughts. When any sort of happiness or positivity (although may not be genuien) is given they wrap their lives around that. Such as an abused wife.
ReplyDeleteI think that many peoples depression is mainly based on what people are told to think and believe. Mainly I feel that the media and people if higher power put into peoples minds what’s beautiful, and what’s ‘cool’. I think that if they put that everyone is beautiful and that people aren’t losers for what they think is fun, that there would be a lot less depression in the world.
ReplyDeleteDepression and low self esteem are problems that affect our society in soo many ways. It doesn't just affect one age group in particular, but it affects everyone in different ways. So many people feel that need to turn to drugs to self medicate and others go to a doctor to get "legal drugs". Either way I think that the drugs, whether they be street drugs or prescription drugs, just mask the underlying issue. It doesnt really get to the bottom of the problem. These people need to get counseling on a daily basis.
ReplyDeleteThe low slef esteem can cause many problems in our society from eating disorders to mental problwms. People do drastics things if they don't believe in themselves. They tend to hurt themselves like cutting and attempted suicide. The cognitive can effect that scoial behavior and this can pose a problem in the career world.
