Most of us know it as the Golden Rule: “Do Unto Others…”
Philosophers refer to it as the Law of Reciprocity…
Kant called it the Categorical Imperative…
Fundamentally, it is a universal principle of Ethics, which keeps us from harming others at least, and at best, tells us to embrace the humanity of everyone.
Go to page 292 in our text. There are seven major Religions listed and their interpretation of the Rule.
Discuss how these statements are SIMILAR and how following any of the individual interpretations contribute to a life worth living and to Universal Good.

ReplyDeleteAll these religions have a base of treat others how you would want to be treated. So why do so many people still commit heinous crimes to and against each other. Now I am in no way shape or form condemning or claiming that any one religion is better or worse or right or wrong but it all comes down to what people believe. I think a big problem with some Christian religions is once a sin or act of violence is committed, the offender can be, in their eyes, absolved by asking for forgiveness or going to confession only to repeat the same or worse crime because no immediate punishment was placed. The Wiccan religion is similar in that there is a balance and what you do to others will effect the balance and how it is re payed to you. I think it all depends how how much a person really has faith and belief in their life and afterlife. If they truly believe that their actions hold tremendous consequences in this life and the next, they we truly try to be a good, better person.
The phrase "Do Unto others" gives the meaning that all humans are supposed to treat others as they wish to be treated. Not to expect to treat someone harshly but expext them to treat you well back. I think some religions mentioned in the book agree with that as well but when it comes down to it, it is the individual that chooses how they really treat ohters. I dont think that all people have it in their heart to be kind, but inreturn expect to be treated as if they are a king or queen. If more people treated others as they wish they were treated , the world would be a much better place and more of us would get along
ReplyDeleteI have always felt that that I would always want to be treated the way I treat others. That is not always the case, some people have no morals and do not follow the rule "Due unto others". I think it is all in the way you are brought up as a child. Have respect for others, thats what my parents rule of life was. Its very unfortunate that some people live their lives feeling that they can do and say anything to anyone at anytime. Most of the time that get you no where in life.
ReplyDeleteAll of these religions have the same base of how people should be treated. It is a persons perception of which religion is right for them. I think if people have the value of they will be held accountable for their actions, it would change the way alot of people act and treat others.
ReplyDeleteJayme PHIL 250-901
All of these religions are centered around the same statement to "do unto others aas you would want done to you". As a catholic, I myself follow the christanity golden rule of "Always treat others as you would like to be treated" and that was the way I was raised growing up. We were always told to treat others with respect. All of these religions follow that rule. I am not saying that I am perfect, because I am by no means, but in my personal opinion SOME people who do not follow any of these Golden Rules tend to run rampant and are not sure of how everyone should be treated. Granted, everyone should realize that every person should be treated equal.
ReplyDeleteIt is my opinion that they are all saying the same thing only in their own words. We would all like to believe that everyone behaves in this manor, but we all know that not everyone does. If we all did, crime wouldn't exists. We would live in a perfect world where there was no such thing as discrimination, bigotry, rich or poor. There is no such thing as a perfect world.
ReplyDeleteAll of these religions incorporate the duty to act for the greater good. Each one has something to say about how one should treat others. This can contribute to the "Universal Good" by defining the duty to treat others with respect and love. If everyone in this worl treated others the way they expected to be treated, war, murder and public crimes would significantly decrease. I think that each religion expects their followers to believe in peace and to reflect that upon others.
ReplyDeleteThese religions all have the same out look on how people should be treated. People have the right to choose what religion is right for them. It all depends on your own personal beliefs. Everyone should treat others how they would like to be treated however, this is not always the case. Many people do not think about their actions before they do them and they do not realize that they will be held accountable for them at some point. Some religions make it seem okay to do wrong as long as you confess your sins but I think that this makes it okay to go and do it again.
ReplyDeleteThey all say the same thing like do unto others as you want done to you. I think this is a good way to live but not all people are religious. Even if you are not religious it is still a good standard to live by and base ones life on.
ReplyDeleteThey all state the same meaning "do unto others..." but in different ways. Each religion is different, even if you dont believe in one, you should still learn this and try to live by it. It's a good ground for everyone to try to treat others as you would want to be treated. It has nothing to do with what you believe just that you believe in this. This is something for everyone not for someone who believes in a certain thing. We if all treated others the way we would want to be treated alot of problems we have now, such as war, discrimination, bullying, etc would decrease because we all are living the way we would do unto others and we would recieve the same thing, which in the end is better for everyone.

ReplyDeleteThese statements are all similar because they all talk about you should treat people like you would like to be treated. These concepts lead to good because if everyone treats everyone good the world would be a much peaceful and better place.
After reading each religions views on how to treat others, I felt that they shared similiar views by saying to treat others as you would like to be treated. Not everyone goes by this philosophy of treating others with respect. A person does not have to be religious to believe in the golden rule. I strongly feel the way people treat others is by who they learn their behaviors from. (family friends media etc) The way children are raised and taught to interact with people can be a major factor in how one treats each other.
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone need to treat other the way they want to be treated no matter what religion they may be. There are some religions that say if you do something bad, then you are a different person. I think that each person should have the same treatment on how people are to them and the other people should treat them the same.
ReplyDeleteAll the saying from all of the different religions is about the way people should treat each other. They all talk about how a person should treat a person well and to treat them like they would want to be treated. I think that they have these as their sayings to make a point that the most important ethic rule is to be kind and treat others well. I think that I like that these are the statements that people have an example and know that treating others well is very important
ReplyDeleteThese seven different rules show the basis of how all people should treat one another as a whole. Spirituality within all people is what determines how one acts and reacts with others.Yes there is crime, yes there is turmoil amongst all people, but how one treats oneself is what determines those events and situations throughout life. Treating others how would like to be treated is basic good manners in a way. Not giving pain to others is a visual dealing with bad and good karma. Wishing others had the same things as you, or wishing to have what others have is the wants and needs to feel alive and secure. How we treat others and our world is what determines or fate and exsistence. There is bad and there is good, but where is there a point of peace.
ReplyDeleteEvery religion in the world has some sort of believes of ethics. Some have the golden rule aspecially in christianity. Many people have this golden rule and most live by this rule and that is my favorite rule.
ReplyDeleteEach of the religious basically say that you should treat others the same way you want to be treated. This belief is a basic one that is universal. It helps us to live a more civil and peaceful life. This advice from the religions groups encourages its followers to be kind and respectful of others. It helps to make a better world and a life worth living.
ReplyDeleteI believe that religion is an ecxellent example of how the best of intentions and the natural good will that most people have can be twisted into something evil and destructive by a few people controlling the masses. A believer, although generally a good person, will do anything that they believe that god requires of them because they want to go to whatever the good place is to go after you die. I don't understand why, if there was a god, he/she wouldn't tell people individually instead of telling thier religious leaders what his/her will is. Religion is one of the largest blights ever to strike humanity. It is resposible for many deaths, much suffering, much of which still goes on today. I don't think it redeems itself by having a few morally correct statements like do on to others..... I really think that religion should be catergorized by its actions moreso than by its words which often seem to be the inspiration for people committing evil actions upon other people, for which they fully believe were just and will be ok with thier god.
ReplyDeleteThe similarity of the statements is that each religion interprets “Do unto others…” in their own manner. Living a life adhering to the interpretations of any one of these religions would be a life worth living in that one is contributing to the greater good. Each religion believes this is a directive from their God; however, I do not believe that one needs to be religious in order to strive uphold this golden rule. If only we all lived by this ideal, the world would be a different place than it is now. Who would among us would truly want harm brought to ourselves?
ReplyDeleteAll seven do have the same meaning, just said in different ways. They all say that you should treat others the way that you feel that you should be treated. Respect each other and cause no hurt on each other. We all should think before we take action and should be able to make good decisions.
ReplyDeleteThe different religions basically follow the golden rule with treat others how you wish to be treated. Following any of these versions will allow you to live following the world's view of universal good. By treating people like you would wish to be treated it creates more fairness in the world and everyone has more respect for each other.
ReplyDeleteAll the religions say the same thing : treat other people the way you would want to be treated. I'm not religious, but what is a fundemental of the universal good is to put it bluntly: don't be a jerk. This doesn't apply just to humanity, it includes animals and every living thing on earth. If some people didn't inherently follow this rule, people wouldn't care and crime would run rampid. Unfortunately people's view of what is good is skwewed from different cultures and societies. Both sides in a war believe they are doing the right thing, but the respect for life goes out the window. In a perfect world we would all be getting along, but with the ability to think for oneself we will always have conflict. The universal good shouldn't be about what is written in a book, it's something within us that says " stop, think about what your doing" before acting. I think if more people respected life and thought about what they were doing the world aoud be a better place to live in.
ReplyDeleteEach of the religions on page 292 in our text all follow the golden rule some way or another. The two I find closest to my beliefs are Christianity and Confucianism. Christianity beliefs that you should always treat others as you would want them to treat you. I try and follow this belief as much as I can. Confucianism beliefs that do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you. This belief is almost the same as Christianity and plays a key part in how you should treat others. When it comes down to it people treat you how you treat them.

ReplyDeleteIts a simple concent to follow through life, treat others as you would like to be treated. Dont stab someone in the back and expect them to do you favors.
All religions discussed seem to follow the same idea of the Golden Rule - Treat others as you would want to be treated. I was raised with this mentality, and I think that I am a decent human being. I think that it is important to live by this rule, even if you are not always treated the way you deserve to be treated. You need to ty to take the high road in all situations. Later in life, you will be much happier if you are able to forgive rather than hold a grudge for years.
ReplyDeleteThere are many different religions that people believe in, over all we all think in same way, but we just say if differently. I would like to call myself a catholic person. I believe in “do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you”, Analects 15; 23. When I was reading thru all the other sayings with religions, they all pretty much say the same thing just in different words. I think that people need think about how to treat people and do on to others how you would do to yourself. We all need to respect people and understand why they live the way they are, just because it not our way does not make it wrong, too many people think this way with religion and they should not in my option. Overall it is all it is the same we all believe in a God or person to guide us in the right diction.
ReplyDeleteEven while attending elementary school, it is taught that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. In different types of religions, no matter how it is worded, all have the same common base that one should treat another fairly, respectfully, and how you would expect to be treated. I believe the reason why people who have faith in a religion have a better self worth, and have a positive attitude is because they follow those guidelines. When always treating others with kindness, they typically receive kindness as a return. Always having these positive out looks, and being treated equally helps promote positive self talk and awareness; which is important for self worth.
ReplyDeleteAs you go on through out your life people will come and go and everyone you meet has a different out look on how you should live your life. Sometimes it is how a person is brought up and sometimes it is the way thy believe. In every religion you will find things that may amaze you and some stuff you just don't get. The thing i just don't get is why we fight over reliions, it doesn't who you believe in we all have the same morals. You are the child of a god and you do to those who do to you. But if i kill someone i may got to confessional and all my sins are washed away. It just doesnt go together for me. We should all just focus on the fact we all believe in one got we all will do right and wrong and nobody is perfect sin or noo sin.
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Rule to me is what I live by.. I treat people they way I want to be treated. I don't treat anyone poorly. I believe its rude and uncalled for. To get respect you must give it.
ReplyDeleteThe Golden Rule states that every person wants to be treated the same and that everyone shares the same thoughts and feelings from our own frame of reference."If you don't want to be ripped off, don't rip off others. If you don't want your spouse to cheat on you, don't cheat on your spouse. If you don't want to be judged, don't judge." The Golden Rule is a Universal Law because there are several other religions that practice the same rule. Kant believes that we are sensible and intellectual and need to guided by rules to balance the two and that we should consider what would be a universal benefit if everyone behaved in such a fashion. This moral concept reminds me of Ghandhi and MLK non violence fight for rights.
ReplyDeletemy golden rule is about respect and i you dont treat others with respect then they are not going to treat you with respect
ReplyDeleteI believe that each person should live by and obey the Golden Rule. The rule that states that we all want to be treated with respect, so everyone should treat each other the way you would want someone to treat you. I think that once you give one person the respect they deserve they will be more than willing to give the same respect back.
ReplyDeletemy golden is is to respect others until they do me wrong then its who gives a s***. i dont like back stabbers. i dont trust very easily. so once who do something thats wrong to me dont expect me to be nice.
ReplyDeleteAll of the religions have to do with doing to others what you want to be done to you. My golden rule is treat others the way you want to be treated. So for example if you dont want to be made fun of dont make fun of other people.
ReplyDeleteJennifer M
ReplyDeleteMy golden rule is all about respect. We are always taught that if you show and give respect to others than they will also give respect to you but that isn't always true. I always give respect to people and if they disrespect me than I'm done with that person.
I think people get very wrapped up up in the wrong things in life. Such as money, fame and looks. They forget about one of the most important things is love. If everyone chose to focus on help each other rather then how to get head of them the world would be a better place. i believe the "greater good" of the world is any love left over from past generations that took the time to teach their children the right way to act.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the golden rule is extremely important to follow, although not many people do. I feel this because if you are being mean to someone, making them upset, you would normally get upset if someone were to make fun of you. And I feel that people should just bite their tongues and just not make people feel down because they want to feel up.
ReplyDeleteThe golden rule should have been taught to us as children. We teach our children to be nice to everyone and treat everyone equally. I know that this was something that I taught to my child very early on, while in preschool. The rule is very simple, treat others the way you want to be treated. Good things come to good people and bad things happen to bad people. This is a rule that should be followed throughout out lifetime into adulthood. If you want people to treat you nice, you have to treat them nice as well.
ReplyDeleteOut of the seven religions I believe they all have a similar underlying meaning. This is dicussed on page 292 of our textbook. I try to believe that we all have a choice to make right and wrong decisions, and a lot of the time these decisions are based on a religion or the simple fact that if feels right, or will help another human being. Christiany and Confucianiam I believe are the most similar. Treat others the way you would like to be treated is a good place to start when trying to morally live your life.
ReplyDeleteWell within every person is what determines how one acts and reacts towards other people and circumstances. The Golden Rule states that every person wants to be treated the same. Also treat people the way you want to be treated. Every persons spirutual beliefs a different from one another. So respect other people for who they are.
ReplyDeleteI beliecve in the rule that you treat others as yourself. This is good because if we just worry about ourselves and not others than we can focus on what tools we can do to makwe our lioves better. This can be used in all forms of society from goverment to everything. Not only for personal growth but the growth of friends and colleagues as well.
