The Right and the Good

Virtually everyone, at one time or another, has to make decisions based on either  The Right Thing to Do or The Good  Thing to Do.  From what we have discussed, there certainly is a difference between the two, and the differences are  reflected  by  our viewpoints based on Ethics, Morals and Values.
Describe a dilemma that you may face in  your chosen career where you have two choices…one being the Right Thing to do, and the other being the Good Thing to do. State the dilemma, two options and explain which is the Right Thing and which is the Good Thing---and why.
You do not have to state your choice, and remember you are to  describe examples of  Right and Good---not  Wrong, Evil or Bad.

  1. In the Medical field I think you could run into alot of situations where right and good will run into eachother based on privacy laws and patients feelings. We are supposed to do the right thing and not get emotionally attached or feel their emotions. The good thing to do in my opinion is to ease their feelings, but we are supposed to do it without feeling connected. That is easier said than done, especially when for example there may be a death involved. The only right thing to do is balance your feelings with the appropriate reaction and maintain your professionalism and still show care.

The business field is filled with opportunities where making the right decision is critical. For example, if you are in a management position and you have an employee that you just do not like, that is not enough grounds to fire them. You need to go through the proper process of informing them of what they are doing wrong if anything and give them an opportunity to fix it and then if they don't they can be terminated. I work with people I don't like all the time but because of the type of person I am I do my best to get through it. As a future employer it is going to be challenging for me to keep an employee if i feel that they aren't a right fit for my business. But because that isn't grounds for firing them, the decision i would make is to go through the proper process or even talk to them about maybe making some changes. That would be the right thing to do.

  3. In the medical field , I have faced a few dilemmas where I have been asked by patients to tell them what is wrong with them before the doctor has even come in the room. As a medical assistant I cannot nor will I try to give anyone any medical diagnosis. I just simply tell them I do not have that right but I also tell them to tell me what symptoms they are having so that I can document them for the doctor to review. The good thing was that I asked the patients how they were feeling and if they had any questions or concers, but the right thing is that I did not give any information that I had no right giving.

  4. In the medical field I think I will face a dilemmas quite often. Patients will want to know what is wrong with them right away. I can understand how nerve wracking it is to have to wait for the physician to come into the room. When we are sick we want to know what is wrong with us right then and there and to have to wait longer just makes us more upset. Patients may want us to release certain medical information via the telephone or by email but with the privacy laws we cannot do that. The right - we don't. We have to follow certain guidelines.

In networking you can see emails going in and out of a network so if you see something you want to ignore you cant. If you had a friend that worked at the same place and you saw emails describing a plot to steal money from the company the right thing to do would be tell your boss and maybe have him fired. Now some people think the good thing to do would be keep your friends secret and not tell anyone but that could turn around on you for not catching the bad email.

  6. In the position of a Medical Administrative Assistant, there will arise situatuions in which choices will have to made as opposed to what is right and what is good. In a situation where you might see a co-worker steeling, the right thing to do would be to inform someone. In a situation where it is a good thing to do, would be to help a co-worker get up with hteir work if they are behind.

  7. The right things to do for people within the business field today are based on how you treat people. How people work together to solve problems is the good thing to do throughout business.Being presentable for customers is the right thing for businessmen as well as of treating them well. To work together within a business to solve problems and create goodness for customers is always a good thing to.

  8. I’m in the field of computer networking and there are many dilemmas that I will face. One dilemma I could face would be if someone is going something bad on a work computer and I’m the networking administrator I would have to go through that persons email if they were planning on taking down the company. The right thing to do would go to your boss and tell him what’s going on but the good thing to do would stay quiet if he was your friend and just stay quiet about the whole besides to your boss.

  9. I am going into the medical field where I know I will face a dilemma each and every single day. There are many issues within the medical field. An example is what the patient wants us to do but what we r obligated to do. We have to make the right choice even if it isn't the right choice for the patient. We have rules and regulations we must follow. We have to do what is ethically right even without the patient agreeing with us. Even if it's not the right thing for the patient, it may be right for us to do. We have a job and duty to do and we must get them done. Even if I don't agree with what I must do, it is my job and I must remain professional to get my job done. I must show empathy but not sympathy.

  10. Being in the medical field there are going to be many ethical decisions that will have to be made. I think that a big issue now days is with the patients privacy. We are suppost to do the right thing when it comes to talking about or letting other people know information about patients. The good or right thing would be to not gossip about the patients information and if anyone asks for it other than the patient, to know and understand that HIPAA law. The right thing would be to say nothing.

  11. In my profession as a paralegal I think this problem will come up a lot. I think for me this will come up the most in cases when I am trying to put a case together and I don’t like what has happened in the case and I feel that they have done the wrong thing. I will feel like the right thing to do is to represent them like I do any one that I think has done the right things. I think that I will be tempted sometime to do the wrong thing because I feel that they have not done the right things. I will have to overcome that feeling and do the right thing for that person and present their case as if I have no opinion on the case. I will have to give them the same amount of time and effort as any other client that I have worked on their case.

  12. In my career of business you need to make the right decisions. I know if you work with someone you do not like you need to go through the proper channels to let them know. I would let the person know that I do not like them and then let my employer know also. If both parties know then we can work something out then.

  13. In the medical field I have many choices I am faced with. What I may think is the good thing to do is not always the right thing I have to do. For example, if I’m out somewhere and I see a car accident I cant just stop and start working on a patient. I have to first ask if it is ok to and if they don’t answer I have to think if it is the right thing to do by helping them or the good thing. If I don’t have the right training then I cant do it but I may think it is the good thing to do. It would not be the right thing to do. The right thing would be to wait till the ambulance comes so they can take care of them.

  14. Ethics are all around us. we believe and follow our one beliefs and it is all based on our traditions. I believe that i always do the right thing but i'm sure others think differently. i live my life thinking and doing the right things for myself and others.

  15. in my field of graphic design, a dilemma that could come up would be a client wanting me to falsely advertising their company. for example they want me to say that their product is the best in the world. Nothing is the best in the world. in my case i would probably turn them away, or ask them to change their ideas because i don't want to get sued for helping with false advertising.

  16. in the graphic design field there is always good and bad descions to make. wether to please the client or to not and loose your job. if teh client wants you to do something thats illegal you have that choice and its gonna suck.

  17. In the medical field you are going to put into many situations where you want to do what you feel is right but it is wrong to do. One case would be if a patient came in with an STD you are not allowed to tell their partner. Even if they are threaten to get the STD, you are not at any point able to tell the partner because it is against HIPPA laws. You know that if it was you, you would want to know but in this situation you need to be professional.

  18. A dilemma that a paralegal may face is building a defense for someone that has confessed to the attorney of being guilty of the charges. This information is protected by the attorney/client privilege, which extends to the paralegal as well.
The right thing to do would be to keep the information confidential and to build the best possible case for the client. This is the right thing to do because it is what is ethical. Attorneys are required by law to follow a set of rules that the paralegal should adhere to as well.
The good thing to do would be to be to inform the court of the client’s confession. This is the good thing to do because it is what is moral. Anyone who commits a wrong should face the consequences of their actions.

  19. In the graphic design field, there are many decisions to make. You have to please the person you are designing for and if you mess that up then it may result in not having a job anymore. You have to know what is a right thing to do at your job and it they tell you to do something against their rules, then don't do it because there might be a chance to change the way the problem started and ended.

  20. I treat everyone with respect. To get respect you must give it first. I try to teach my kids to give and treat everyone with respect. Sometimes though they speak what they feel. I try to tell them they need think before they speak so they don't offend anyone. They tell me when they do that the people treat them better. I guess I just can't be rude to people.

  21. I believe that the whole litigation aspect of the legal profession is often a complex series arguements between sides that believe thier party is the right side. I believe that law, although not always right, is the reflection of what society believes to be right generally. As we progress and change as a society, and as we change our opinion on what is right and wrong, the law; although admittedly slower than society, reflects those changes. Even though good will not always prevail, like it does in the movies, law pushes society in the direction of good.

  22. Currently I am studying to be a medical administrative assistant here at Bryant and Stratton. One dilemma I may face in my career would be breaching confidentiality. As a medical administrative assistant I am constantly dealing with patient’s medical records and their financial records. If I were to come across a billing error that ended up benefiting the patient but was actually an error should I let the insurance company know? If I know the patient personally and the error was them getting a check of money back due to the error should I let it go? The right thing to do would be to contact the insurance company and let them know. The good thing to do would be to let my friend benefit from the error. Your friend may need the money and this mistake could solve their problems. Letting the billing mistake go could get you fired potentially though.

  23. As a medical assistant there are going to be situations that are the right thing to do or what is a good thing to do. There will be times when the patient will ask me what is wrong with them when I am trying to triage the patient and I could be eager to tell them what I think and maybe try and put the patient at ease. However this is not the right thing to do. Being a medical assistant I can not diagnose or give my opinion about what I think is wrong.

  24. In my future career field of IT Security, there will be several instances in which I will be able to see things that employees are doing that they would prefer to keep private, such as surfing the web for non work related things, updating their Facebook accounts, checking their Fantasy Football stats, and even online shopping. In such a situation, the right thing to do would be to inform the manager or supervisor of the activities you found. The good thing to do would be to send an email that informs users that their internet usage may be monitored and reinforce the company's internet usage policy. Then take corretive action if the behaviors continue.

  25. In my future career as a paralegal there will be many instances where i will have to choose between the right thing and the good thing to do. Especially in the legal profession when you have to adjust facts and present things in a way that protects everyone (even the defendants) rights. I will know cruitial information about many of my clients and be trusted to tell no one! Even if telling someone might help them in the long run (such as a drug addict) i still cannot reviele that information to anyone unless i have the clients consent.

  26. I think there is definitely a difference between the right thing and the good thing. In my profession, it’s the good thing to do to tell and confers for your client that they are guilty or those they are lying, but it’s ethically right to keep the confidentiality. Sometimes there are situations where the right thing and the good thing are the same thing, but then it’s the complete opposite.

  27. My chosen career choice is medical administrative assistant. The idea of ethics and morals is very important in the health field and can determine the well-being of a patient and even save someone’s life. The situation I've chosen to present is with a doctor, an ill patient and an administrative assistant. If the patient's family member approaches you at the front desk where you work and wants to see the ill patient, but the patient is on complete contact isolation with no visitors allowed, then the administrative assistant would have to tell them they can't go in and explain why. If the assistant let the family member in it would be good and make the family member and patient happy. But ethically, it would not be right. You could potentially spread disease and harm others. The doctor should be contacted and the visitor should have to see the doctor for any further questions.

  28. An ethical dilemma that I may face in my career as a paralegal is having to deal with a client that committed an awful heinous crime. And not allowing my personal morals and values to get in the way of doing my job the way it is required. I am going to have to learn that it is a job and to not let other peoples lives and decisions shadow my own. While I am in the workplace, I will remember that I am there to do a job and to make a living for my family and the benefit of my own self. I am sure that I will be helping people in a positive way and that will overshadow all of the bad experiences I will encounter.

  29. An ethical problem in my future career choice where i will have to make a decision could be a fellow co-worker is using copyrighted work for his designs, but tells me it will only be that one time and asks not to report him. The right thing to do in this situation is to tell him to change his design or report him to the company because he is stealing another designer's work. The good option would be to not report him and let him proceed with his design, it would be the good design because he could lose his job if i reported him and he said it was the last time but it is not the right decision because he is still stealing another person's work.

  30. In the medical field, there is going to be a variety of ethical issues that I may face. The one main issue for me would be HIPAA. If a patient does not want certain family members knowing about their condition then as a medical assistant you would need to respect their wishes and not let your personal views interfere with your job. Medical assistants took an oath on HIPAA and need to uphold the ethical laws.

  31. The American Law is the law of right or wrong decisions. The concept of equal treatment requires treating things that are sufficiently alike in the same way. We all have different moral and values however we need to be picky in ways that will benefit us in the future. Going into the field of Law I will come across many challenges such as Competence between Male and Female, confidentiality and many more. There are many opportunities and reasons that can motivate me into making a right and/or wrong decision. There is an Ethical Wall in which a paralegal has to follow that all paralegals have to go by this will avoid misrepresentation of a firm and controversies with current and potential clients. To avoid these issues I will pay close attention to my surrounding and not do anything that will not benefit me in the long run.

  32. In life people have to make the choices that will either make or brake them. These choices are either good or bad and can lead you to a place you do not want to be at like jail or dead. In the Tech field the choices that one has to make can be a very costly one to the company or organization. When a business places their trust in you, you do not want to vilate that trust. using another person's access code can be harmful to you and to that individual too.

  33. In Graphic Deisgn, there are many issues with ethics one could run into. Primarily people think of plagiarism; which is a big issue. Using works that do not belong to you is a very serious matter and can not be taken lightly. For example, using someones logo for yuor own because you feel it fits your business. That is not allowed and the original company could get the offending company shut down, or out of a lot of money!

  34. What is the difference between good and right. Well they can go hand in hand but sometimes it is very hard to what is right when you know it may hurt some one else which makes it bad for you to do. For example my sister babysits for a child and the child comes with buses all over body and sometime does not have the proper clothes to wear they are to small and don’t even fit the child. What do you do if you think a child is abused do you report it or just talk to the Childs mother and hope things will change. If you report the parent to child services then you might not have a job but the kid may be safe from ever being hurt by that parent again. That is the case of doing something that is right but not good.

  35. I think as a paralegal there may be occasions where you will need to be careful about getting into any trouble distinquishing between right and good. There may be a situation where a client needs advice that the paralegal knows the answer but a cannot give the advice to the client...that client may have a deadline and the only way that can go forward is if you help them. If you do the good thing and give them advice then you are violating unauthorized practice of law. The right thing would be to tell them that you are not an attorney and cannot give legal advice.

  36. In my field of business and accounting, you can run into many things that you have to make ethical and good decisions. While as a manager you have to put everything into a business decision, not personal. You evaluate an employee on job performance and not how you personally feel about them. With recordkeeping, personal files and financial information, you have to be ethical and trustworthy.

  37. In the medical field there are a lot of tough choices that I will have to make. For example when a family member wants to know what is going on with a patient we can not inform them with out concent. I wish in some cases we could tell them so that the patient would have someone to lean on in case of bad news where so people believe that there family don't need to be bothered with it and then they die and the family is left wonderiung why and have to find out after the fact. Which is unfortunate. But the right thing to do is to let the patient do what they feel is right for them.

  38. I think that in the paralegal field, a problem I will encounter will be whether or not I want to work on a case based on believing the client to be guilty or innocent. If I were to decline a case because i felt the client was lying and was guilty, i may be fired. In another case it may seem right for me to stand by my values and not work on a case because my gut tells me the client is lying. What is right in my field is to work on the case and rely on the law to do its job. What is wrong in my mind is to go against my morals.

  39. in the networking field I will have to worru about theft abnd Hippa laws. These will make sure that i don't take any employee info and person stuff like SS#s and IDs. That is so i don't steal and keep a good ethical code of conduct.

  40. A ethical Issues I might have to face that I some of my friends in the IT field have faced is find information sent over e-mail or found someone visited web sites that aren’t allowed and that person or persons is a friend that they work with. As a network administrator it will be part of my job to spot these violations and stop them and report it to the higher up’s. This is a moral and ethical issues because you don’t want to get your friend in legal trouble and fired. Also what if that friend has a family and they go to jail or lose their job? Then their family will have to pay the price for that persons wrong doing or their stupid neglect because face it people make mistakes and it could have been a total accident for all I know. So here is the issue, do I confront that person and find out the truth and then do I believe that person and decide to sweep it under the rug or do I just report them and let the chips fall where they may? And if that person was to get fired over that and it turns out to be a complete accident and they didn’t mean to do that then that person would have a hell of a time finding another job with that on their record. Also if they were your friend they should know that you will found out what has been happening and are they taking advantage of your friendship? Is a situation that I can’t really answer till that day I might have to confront a issues like that one. But I do know that if was the right person like my best friend of 16 years who is just like my brother I would not turn him in just because I look after my family no matter what, then it because a matter of my values and I have strong family values but I hope a family member wouldn’t ever put me in that situation.
